SBL Fayette County Hospital

Health and Wellness Program

The goal of the rehab staff is to provide you with the information necessary to make educated decisions about health, and recommend programs to help you achieve your goals. Weight loss does not always equate fat loss. Body Composition Analysis can help to ensure that you are truly achieving healthy weight loss with diet and exercise.

Our Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) analyzer provides the patient with data about their body’s percentage of lean mass, fat mass and hydration levels. Lean tissue is a better conductor than fatty tissue, as it possesses higher water content. Therefore, the lower the resistance, the lower the percentage of body fat. In some instances, an individual may be dehydrated which can result in a slightly higher fat mass reading (remember water is a conductor).

Standard body fat levels are 24% for women and 16% for men. We all need a certain amount of fat, as it serves as an energy reservoir when glucose reserves are depleted. A fat mass greater than 25% for men and 35% for women is considered to increase the risk for coronary heart disease.

Normal hydration levels range from 69-74%. Again, a reading of less than 69% may skew the reading slightly and result in a high fat mass percentage.

Your target weight will be based on your lean mass. If your lean mass increases, then your overall target weight will increase. Remember weight to lose = fat to lose.

Our goal is to provide our patients with the information they need to lose fat mass instead of lean mass, and allow for the most healthy outcome possible.
