The latest in 3D mammography technology and DEXA scan is now offered at Sarah Bush Lincoln Fayette County Hospital.

For breast cancer detection, a 3Dimensions system by Hologic, was introduced in July. The system is designed to provide the highest quality 3D images for radiologists to interpret and a more comfortable mammography experience for patients.

SBLFCH Imaging Services Director Rena Myers said “We’re excited about the enhanced technology. In addition to new equipment, the mammography exam room has been renovated and can easily accommodate wheelchairs or anyone with mobility issues.” Previously, 3D mammograms were available two days a week on the Sarah Bush Lincoln Mammography van. Technologists now provide 3D mammograms and DEXA scans to measure bone density, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Screening mammograms are recommended for women of average risk of breast cancer, beginning at age 40. Those between the ages of 35 and 40 may be screened based on risk factors and family history. The goal of a screening mammogram is to detect breast cancer early when it is still too small to be felt by a physician or the patient.

SBLFCH also updated its DEXA scanning technology with the Horizon DXA, by Hologic. A DEXA scan is used to measure bone density by passing a high and low energy X-ray beam through the body, usually in the hip and the spine. Osteoporosis causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually and early detection is key to keeping people safe. The scan takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete and is painless.

The Diagnostic Imaging team at SBLFCH brings years of experience and compassion to patient care. Amanda Walk, mammography technologist, has more than 20 years of experience in the field of imaging that includes mammograms, X-rays, CTs and DEXA scans. She is the newest member of the team, but a familiar face in Fayette and Bond Counties.

To promote Breast Cancer Awareness month, anyone who comes in for a mammogram in October will be entered to win a fantastic gift basket. It’s a soft-sided cooler filled with a variety of items.
